Post Extraction Care

Immediately after the extraction bite on gauze until the bleeding ceases. This may take several hours.  If the bleeding recommences later place clean gauze over the wound and again bite on gauze until the bleeding stops.

Slight pain is normal after the anaesthetic wears off. Take a mild analgesic in recommended doses.

Rest at home after the extraction.  You may need to take time off work depending on the number of teeth taken out and degree of difficulty.

Clean your teeth as normal.  The day following the extraction you should begin rinsing your mouth using either a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water or a proprietary mouthwash.  Rinse as often as possible especially after meals.

The wound will heal quicker if left alone.  Don’t disturb the wound by touching it, poking it or biting on it. Hot liquids or alcohol will disturb the clot and should not be drunk the day of the extraction. You should continue to avoid alcohol if taking analgesics or antibiotics.  A soft diet is preferable until the wound heals.  Drink a lot of fluids.

Smoking dramatically increases your chance of infection or slow and painful healing… don’t smoke.
