Fluoride

Fluoride is widespread in rocks, soils, the sea and all water.  Small amounts of fluoride are present in almost all foods.

Fluoride is normally present in the body, mainly the teeth and the bones.

The role of fluoride in the prevention of dental caries has been known for over 60 years and the fluoridation of public water supplies has been widely adopted over the past 40 years.

Community water fluoridation (adjusting the level of fluoride in the water) has been shown in more than 100 studies in over 20 countries to be safe, economical and effective. It benefits all people irrespective of age, income, cleaning of teeth and diet. Everybody except people without teeth.

During the early years fluoride is incorporated and built into the structure of the tooth. After the teeth erupt fluoride protects and toughens the outer surface of the tooth. The most effective way is frequent exposure to low concentration fluoride. A person who is not at high risk of decay will benefit from the fluoride in the toothpaste and fluoride in the water supply. They will be getting adequate fluoride. This is assuming that after brushing you don’t eat, drink or rinse.  Toothpaste is good for your teeth and the longer it stays in contact with your teeth the better.

The current recommendations for home fluoride include the following:

Fluoride supplements are not recommended. In a non-fluoridated area the recommendation is to make up fluoridated water for drinking and place it in the fridge for drinking and cooking.

After brushing teeth the recommendation is to spit not rinse. This applies to all people and all ages.

Fluoride Mouthrinses and high strength toothpastes are recommended for teenagers and adults with a high risk of decay.
